This genus is highly variable in cultural requirements, leaving something for most anybody to grow. If you've not tried a fritillary, you should. Some have a skunky odor which is displeasing to some gardeners, crown imperials being well-known for this, but this also makes them excellent mole and gopher repellants.

Many of this genus are great for planting in the yard, because they are relatively unintrusive to the lawn and provide late winter blooms, reminding us that spring is just around the corner. Suggestion: From a distance, most of us could not tell one species from another. For some of us this would be true even if looking at them up close. A good reason to buy different species would be to extend bloom season. One could have snowdrops in bloom for a couple of months, instead of a couple of weeks, if one wanted. You could even have some bloom in the fall... Due to CITES fees, this genus must be ordered in quantity. If you believe you will spend at least $250, you might consider reviewing the wholesale prices.
